TopWine China Newsletter - January 2011
This newsletter is designed to keep you up to date with the latest developments and provide you with useful information about the TopWine China Exhibition and Conference, which takes place in the majestic China World Trade Center complex in Beijing, with sufficient allure and cachet to attract the right visitors.
TopWine China 2011: 50% bigger than in 2010
The excitement generated by the success of the very first TopWine China 2010 has hardly subsided and TopWine China 2011 is already facing a stunning growth in stand space. The promotional and sales campaigns have been launched, the websites - both English and Chinese - are up and running, and 2010 exhibitors are requiring much bigger stands while the list of new exhibitors/country pavilions is growing steadily every day as well.
Once again this year France (UBI) will be the strongest representative of the international wine business at TopWine China with the most famous winegrowing regions providing an excellent overview of the regional specialities and variety of different styles. But also Italy (ICE), Spain and Australia are doubling or even tripling their stand space in 2011 in order to give as many young and established vintners, as well as famous winegrowing regions the possibility to introduce their high quality wines on the Chinese market.
As Organizers of TopWine China 2011 we are proud to announce that important wine countries such as Portugal and Argentina officially decided to attend the event with a national pavilion for the first time as well. Besides a growing number of new individual exhibitors from all over the world, including a strong presence of wineries from Chile, 2010 exhibitors from Germany, Hungary and Georgia have also indicated to considerably enlarge their stand space.
The Top Reason for exhibiting at TopWine China 2011 and probably the only one exhibitors really need...there is no other truly international dedicated wine exhibition and conference in the northern part of China for selling wine to a highly targeted audience with purchasing power.
TopWine China 2011:
Overwhelming Chinese interest
The Chinese section of TopWine China 2011 also shows an optimistic and auspicious increase of stand space. More and more Chinese mainland importers and wine traders have booked stand space in Hall 2 and Hall 3 of the China World Trade Centre. There is so much interest in participating at the event, that it is estimated that all three exhibition halls will be fully booked before the end of March 2011. The highly qualified visitors to TopWine China 2010 are the main reason for the overwhelming Chinese interest. Especially wine traders from the Eastern and Southern part of China are eager to come to Beijing in May 2011. They are all aware of the high growth rate of wine consumption in Central and North China.
Present your wine in our separate wine tasting area
As we all know wine is a result of a very complex production process, which starts in the vineyard and ends with the filling and storing of bottles. The grapes produced in the vineyards certainly have the greatest influence on the quality and type of wine. However, also the wine making techniques play an important role in determining the style of the wine. The key processing steps until grapes have become wine include the storage on the mash, the pressing, the method of temperature-controlled fermentation, the use of yeasts and its storage and maturing in steel, wood or oak barrels.
In order to present wines from all over the world to a Chinese audience TopWine China 2011 has decided to build a central wine tasting area where only TopWine China 2011 exhibitors are allowed to invite professional wine tasters from the Far East, such as sommeliers or buyers for retailers, to learn more about their wines and to experiment with new or unusual varietals.
For further details concerning the booking of the tasting zone, please contact our Chinese partner George Zhu by e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org

Fake wine stuns nation, six wrongdoers detained
In the latest food scandal to rock China, six people were detained, more than a dozen corporate accounts were frozen and tainted wine bottles were pulled off shelves after red wine made in Changli county, Hebei Province, was found to have been both chemically altered and falsely labeled as a superior product. The Jiahua, Yeli and Genghao wineries have been accused of forgery and of adulterating their wine, during investigations by the local government that shut down their operations, the Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday, adding that sixteen corporate accounts involving 2.83 million yuan ($427,000) were frozen.
A total of 5,114 boxes of wine, thought to have been falsely labeled, and 19 templates for forging brand labels, as well as 280 unlabeled bottles, were seized. The county is famous for wine production, as it produces a third of China's domestic grape wine and has been nicknamed 'China's Bordeaux'. Supermarkets in Beijing pulled the products off their shelves after the report.
"We are highly concerned about this behavior. To ensure safety measures, we have already started to remove the suspected wines from the shelves," Zhang Tao, spokesman for Walmart supermarkets in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, told the Global Times. Fu Yun, who is in charge of liquor in Wu Mart in Beijing, told the Beijing Morning Post that they have already stopped selling the products and have asked manufacturers to provide test reports and new licenses.
Hefei, the provincial capital of Anhui Province, has also discovered hundreds of adulterated wine bottles from Changli county, according to the Anhui Business Daily.
Asian market drives champagne sparkle in 2011-2012
The global Champagne sector is set for a veritable turnaround in 2011-12 as Asian market continues to grow, according to Stephen Charters, Reims Management School's chair of Champagne management. "Champagne is a drink related to confidence," Charters said. "It's something you drink when you have something to celebrate. With the economy in recovery, there's now more to celebrate."
2009 was a traumatic year for the industry, with worldwide sales figures tumbling 42%, but 2010 looks to have been a much better year for sales. In the first seven months, exports of all French wines and spirits were up, with Champagne showing the strongest growth with an increase of 36%. Champagne exports outside of the European Union have picked up significantly, most notably exports to the United States and to Asia. While exports to the European Union have also increased compared to last year, market recovery was less substantial there, particularly in the United Kingdom and in Germany, two of Europe's most important markets. It is predicted that between 310 and 315 million bottles of Champagne will be sold in 2010, an increase of 5.8% to 7.5% over 2009, when 293million bottles were shipped.
"It seems likely that there will be a rebound in 2011-2012 and new markets, especially those in Asia, will continue to grow for Champagne," said Charters, "So the producers will continue to have the ability to price their product at an appropriate level to cover their costs and to meet all the margins that they require."
Shanghainese drank more than 500,000 hl of wine in 2010
The consumption of imported wine in Shanghai has reached 500,000 hl in the first ten months of 2010, which increased by 40% year on year. Wu Jian-Ping, the secretary-general of Shanghai Drinks Association, said that in terms of case volume, imports from Italy gained 240% year on year. Wu said the imported wine boom in Shanghai was partly realized because of the World Expo as well as the increasing consumer interest in fine wines.
Sales agreement between Fournier Père et Fils and Chinese operator Utrans Global Wine
The Chinese group Utrans Global Wine has ordered €1 million of wine for delivery in 2011 from the Sancerre producer Fournier Père et Fils. The contract was signed when the Chinese president Hu Jintao visited France. It represents 10% of this family estate's total sales. Utrans Global Wine specialises in the warehousing and redistribution of wines. The major advantage for the French company is that it will only be liable for duty when the bottles actually leave the warehouse and are sold in China.
